the player is depicted as their brain expanding from inside their head into
a volumetric grid or hexfield or such

each cell has space between it and the other cells of brain volume, so that
attacking ships and diplomatic convoys and such can travel between them

danger hails on the regions of brain from a distance. if a brain volume
region is hit by danger anything might happen! it could explode or be
vaporized or turn into poop! :(

you must place shields and intercept the raining danger so as to protect
your brain

as you successfully let your brain think unimpeded, you get to spawn
angelic brain protectors from your cognitive functioning. these can be
placed in front of brain areas to ward off incoming danger on their own
